Overview

The Tribe Toyota[1] car community offers a yearly lineup of events for its members, subsidized by UMW Toyota Motor. While entertainment and getaways are a staple, there are also social responsibility events such as a defensive driving program and even a self-defense workshop in response to ever escalating crime rates.

Origins and History

The idea of an owner’s community came to UMW Toyota Motor in 2003 and started out as the Funser community for Toyota Unser owners. As befitting the Unser being a lifestyle vehicle, the Funser was a lifestyle community.

In 2005, Funser was renamed to Tribe Toyota and grew to include all lifestyle vehicles in that time: RAV4, Hilux, Avanza, Innova, Wish and Fortuner. The community’s offerings were also improved, and events increased from 2 to 5 per year.

Community Offerings

In addition to online community staples such as a forum, photo gallery and downloads section, Tribe Toyota offers extra vehicle-related features to their registered members.

Toyota Owner's Journal

In 2006 UMW Toyota Motor built Toyota Owner’s Journal[2], a site that all Malaysian Toyota owners can log on to, to check the details of each Toyota vehicle they own. In effect, it was an online logbook of all things related to their vehicle.

Interest Groups

In 2008, the Tribe Toyota website was improved to include, in addition to their Forums, Interest Groups, a feature that allowed members to interact with one another based on their interests.

While Tribe Toyota was a gathering of Toyota owners throughout Malaysia, the Interest Groups similarly provided a smaller rallying point for the members living in less urban areas. In effect this created a fostering of more close-knit bonds in the ever-expanding Community.

Events

Since 2005, Tribe Toyota has organised a varied lineup of events for its members which include family oriented outings, road trips, festive celebrations and other community gatherings. Some of the more notable events are:

Amazing Trails: a treasure hunt held annually in March, it organised by Tribe Toyota and has been held in various locations in peninsula Malaysia as well as in East Malaysia.

Flood Assist: Tribe Toyota extended help towards victims of the Johor flood of February 2007. Basic necessities, food products and clothing to were supplied to various locations in Johor.

Driving Dynamics: a specialized defensive driving course for Toyota car owners split into a two-part – theory and practical – training. The modules covered were lane changing, reverse slalom, hard braking test (with and without ABS), smoky figure 8’s and wet-braking exercise.

Merdeka On Wheels: to celebrate Malaysia’s 50th Merdeka, Tribe Toyota held one of its largest member gatherings at the Eye on Malaysia at Titiwangsa in 2007. The event was punctuated by entertainment such as Gamelan, dance troupes, family oriented games and local food challenges.

Tribe Toyota Bash: was an environmental charity drive cum record-breaker held in November 2008. Over 20,000 used aluminium cans were collected as a joint effort by UMW Toyota Motor and Toyota customers in order to create the largest Toyota emblem. After the event, all cans were sent for Recycling and all proceeds were donated to an environmental NGO.
