Toyota Manufacturing UK is the UK manufacturing operation of Toyota, established in December 1989. The vehicle manufacturing plant at Burnaston, Derbyshire assembles cars. The first car off the production line was a Carina on 16 December 1992. Since then production has included Avensis, Corolla and Toyota Auris(5 door model) models. An engine manufacturing factory is located on River Dee, Wales, North Wales.
The processes at Burnaston include stamping (pressing panels from rolls of steel), welding, painting, plastic mouldings (bumpers and instrument panels/dashboards) and assembly and at Deeside machining, assembly and aluminium casting.[1]
On 26 February 2007, Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown visited the Burnaston facility to celebrate the official launch of the Auris in the UK and TMUK used the occasion to announce an investment of Pound sterling 100 million in its Deeside factory to build a Gasoline engine for the Auris.[2] Initial reporting on the engine called it a Petroleum electric hybrid vehicle and it is expected to be used as part of a Hybrid Synergy Drive system.
At its fastest speed, a car can come off the end of the production line approximately every 70 seconds.
Toyota at Burnaston has approximately 4000 employees on site at any one time.
Toyota Manufacturing UK, in partnership with Rapid Electronics, organise the Toyota Technology Challenge[3] - a national Engineering and Technology competition aimed at secondary schools within the UK.
